Reinventing Yourself at 50: My 50th Year Reset
When people talk about reinventing yourself at 50, they usually mean starting over. A new career, a new look, a whole new you.
That’s not what happened to me.
I turned 50 this August, and instead of reinventing myself, I decided to refine. To keep what’s good, release what isn’t, and polish the woman I already am. I’m calling it my 50th year reset.
Why Not Reinvention?
Reinvention says something was wrong with who you were. Refinement says you were always enough, you just need room to shine.
I’ve spent decades as a wife, a mother of seven, a homeschooling mom, an event stylist, an author, and a creator. That woman isn’t someone to throw away. She’s the foundation. My 50th year isn’t about replacing her. It’s about honoring her.
If you want the story of how this all began, read I Didn’t Find Myself. I Refined Her.
What My 50th Year Reset Looks Like
I said yes to things I’d put off. I went back to school to study psychology. I relaunched my blog after years away. I said yes to being featured and seen.
I edited my closet and my calendar. Fewer clothes, more intention. Fewer obligations, more evenings at home.
I made self-care daily, not occasional. My morning tea, my skincare routine, and getting dressed with intention are no longer rewards. They’re the foundation of my day.
I stopped measuring my worth in numbers. Followers, likes, and other people’s timelines no longer get to tell me whether I’m doing well.
I let myself be seen. For a long time I stayed in the background. This year I’m choosing to show up, face forward, as myself.
5 Steps to Start Your Own Reset
You don’t have to be turning 50. A reset can start any season.
- Take inventory. Write down what in your life already feels good and worth keeping.
- Name what you’re releasing. One habit, obligation, or expectation that has quietly outgrown you.
- Pick one area to refine. Your style, your health, your home, your work. Just one to start.
- Choose a daily anchor. One small act of self-care you’ll do every single day.
- Say yes to one thing you’ve been putting off. A class, a trip, a dream, a phone call. Just one.
A Glow Up That Starts on the Inside
People talk about a glow up over 40 as if it’s about looking younger. For me, it’s been about feeling more like myself than I ever have. The outside followed the inside.
I’ll keep sharing this year with you, the style, the skincare, and the real moments. I’d love for you to walk it with me.
If you’re ready to start your own refinement era, my 31 Days of Fall Refinement is a gentle place to begin.
