Getting Dressed for No Reason at All

The Refined Letter, No. 2

Good morning, friend.

This week I put on a burgundy top, my favorite wide leg jeans, a pair of pointed heels, and a red lip. Then I walked out to the end of my driveway.

That was it. That was the occasion.

There was no lunch, no meeting, no event. Just an ordinary afternoon and a woman who decided she wanted to feel like herself.

People have asked me about this for years. Back when my days were full and my house was even fuller, readers would say, “How do you still get dressed?” As if getting dressed was something you earned once life calmed down.

I never saw it that way. And at 50, I see it even less.

For a long time, many of us were taught to save the good things. The good dress for the special dinner. The good perfume for the holiday. The good lipstick for the day someone important would see it.

But I’ve started to wonder: who is more important than the woman looking back at me in the mirror every morning?

Getting dressed for no reason isn’t vanity. It’s a quiet way of telling yourself, I’m still here, and I’m worth the effort. It changes how I stand. It changes how I answer the door. It even changes how I speak to myself.

It doesn’t have to be heels. Some days it’s just a soft sweater instead of the old T-shirt, earrings instead of nothing, a swipe of lipstick before I make the tea. Small things. But small things, chosen on purpose, are what refinement really is.

So here’s my invitation for this week.

Pick one ordinary day and dress for it like it matters. Not for anyone else. For you.

Then come back and tell me how it felt. I read every comment.

With love, Mystiqua
