How to Wear Wide-Leg Jeans Over 50 (and Look Polished)
If you’ve been wondering whether wide-leg jeans are “for you” after 50, I’m here to say yes. They’re comfortable, they’re flattering, and they make an everyday outfit look intentional.
The trick is balance. Here’s the exact look I wore this week and the formula behind it.

The outfit
- Burgundy asymmetric neckline top, fitted, with long sleeves
- Light-wash high-rise wide-leg jeans
- Black leather belt with a gold buckle
- Burgundy patent pointed-toe pumps
- Black structured shoulder bag with gold hardware
- Gradient aviator sunglasses, gold earrings, and a berry lip
- Hair in a high top knot

The formula: fitted on top, full on the bottom
Wide-leg jeans have a lot of fabric, so the top needs to be close to the body. A fitted top shows your shape and keeps the outfit from looking boxy. Save the oversized sweaters for slim pants.
1. Choose a high rise
A high waist makes your legs look longer and gives the jeans a clean line. It also means you can tuck your top in and define your waist.
2. Belt it
A belt is the detail that makes jeans look grown-up. A simple black leather belt with gold hardware pulls the whole outfit together and draws the eye to the smallest part of your waist.
3. Add a pointed shoe
Wide hems can swallow a flat shoe. A pointed heel peeking out at the bottom lengthens your leg and makes denim feel dressy. Pointed flats work too.

4. Match your shoes to your top
My burgundy pumps echo my burgundy top. When the color at the top shows up again at the bottom, the outfit looks planned without any effort. It’s one of my favorite tricks.
5. Wear one interesting neckline
The asymmetric neckline on this top does all the work. With a simple outfit, one detail near your face is all you need.

Why burgundy works for fall
Burgundy is one of my Deep Autumn colors, and it looks rich against light denim. If your coloring is warm and deep, try burgundy, olive, or chocolate with your jeans this season. Not sure? Start with Deep Autumn After 40.
Make it your own
- Cooler days: add a camel coat or a cropped black jacket.
- Weekend errands: swap the pumps for pointed loafers.
- Date night: dark-wash jeans, the same top, and gold hoops.
Jeans after 50 aren’t about looking younger. They’re about looking like yourself, polished and at ease.
