My Honest 40+ Skincare Routine (What I Kept and What I Tossed)
I used to think great skin meant more products. More serums, more steps, more promises. My bathroom counter looked like a beauty store, and my skin still looked tired.
So I did something radical. I edited.
I kept what my skin actually responded to, tossed what it didn’t, and built a routine I can do on my busiest days. This isn’t about looking younger. It’s about caring for the skin I’m in, season after season.
What I Kept
Morning
- A gentle, hydrating cleanser. Mature skin doesn’t need to feel squeaky clean. It needs to feel comfortable. LA ROCHE-POSAY | Toleriane Moisturizing Milky Facial Cleanser
- Vitamin C serum. My go-to for brightness and evening out my tone. CLARINS | Multi-Active Glow Serum Vitamin C + AHA Smoothing, Radiance-Boosting Glow
- A hydrating serum. Hyaluronic acid or something similar, applied to damp skin so it holds onto moisture. LANCÔME | Advanced Génifique Radiance Boosting Face Serum
- A rich moisturizer. Creamier than what I used in my 30s. My skin drinks it in. DayWear Moisturizer Multi-Protection Anti-Oxidant 24H‑Moisture Creme SPF 15
- Sunscreen, every single day. Rain or shine, home or out. This is the one step I’ll never skip. Make It Hybrid™ SPF 50 Sunscreen
Evening
Evening is my favorite part of the day for skincare, and if you know me, you know my nights belong to Estée Lauder.
- Double cleanse, step one: a cleansing balm. The Oak Essentials Cleansing Balm melts away makeup and sunscreen without stripping my skin. OAK ESSENTIALS | Cleansing Balm
- Double cleanse, step two: a milky cleanser. I alternate between the Oak Essentials Milk Cleanser and La Roche-Posay’s milky cleanser. Both leave my skin soft and comfortable, never tight. LA ROCHE-POSAY | Toleriane Moisturizing Milky Facial Cleanser or OAK ESSENTIALS | Nourishing Cleansing Milk
- Toner or essence. My Estée Lauder Essence Lotion Toner preps my skin so everything after it absorbs better. ESTÉE LAUDER | Micro Essence Treatment Lotion Toner With Bio Ferment
- Serum. Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum. This is the step I’d never give up. ESTÉE LAUDER | Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Multi-Recovery Complex Serum
- Eye cream. The Clarins eye lift cream, patted gently with my ring finger, never rubbed. CLARINS | Total Eye Lift Refillable Eye Cream
- Moisturizer. Estée Lauder ESTÉE LAUDER | Advanced Night Repair Overnight Treatment seal it all in. I wake up with skin that feels soft and rested. ESTÉE LAUDER | Advanced Night Repair Overnight Treatment
Six steps, about ten minutes, and it’s the most peaceful part of my night.
Body care
My skincare doesn’t stop at my jawline. Neck, chest, hands, and body all get moisture every day. They show the years too, and they deserve the same care. [PRODUCT, ShopMy link]
What I Tossed
- Harsh scrubs. Gritty exfoliators left my skin red and irritated. A gentle exfoliant once or twice a week does far more.
- Stripping foaming cleansers. That tight feeling isn’t clean. It’s dry.
- Too many actives at once. Layering every trending ingredient confused my skin. Fewer, consistent steps work better.
- Skipping the neck. I stopped treating my neck like an afterthought.
- Chasing every launch. If a product works, I keep repurchasing it. Consistency beats novelty.
My Skincare Mindset at 50
My routine started as a promise to myself: one small act of care, every morning and every night. Over time it became one of the quiet ways I show up for me.
That’s what I want for you too. Not a 12-step routine you dread, but a few steps you look forward to.
